With the continuous advancement of display technology, OLED and LED displays are the two most widely used technologies in the market. This article will explore the main differences between OLED transparent displays and traditional LED displays, and conduct comparative analysis in terms of working principles, display effects, energy efficiency, transparency and application scenarios.

1.Differences in working principles

OLED transparent display:
The core of OLED display technology is to use organic materials as light sources to generate light under the action of electric current. Each pixel is self-illuminating, so OLED screens do not require a backlight. This is also one of the fundamental differences between OLED and LED. The transparent OLED display uses a special structural design to make the display have a certain degree of transparency, allowing background objects to be seen through the screen. The working principle of transparent OLED is similar to that of ordinary OLED, but it uses transparent electrode materials and substrates to achieve the transparency of the screen.

    LED display:
LED display is a type of liquid crystal display technology that utilizes LED backlight. The LED display screen forms an image by controlling the passage of backlight through the liquid crystal panel. The backlight source is generally composed of multiple LED lamp beads. The LCD panel itself does not emit light; it relies on a backlight to provide light to display content. The display effect of the LED screen is determined by the dimming technology of the LCD panel and the intensity of the backlight source. Therefore, the LED screen requires backlight support and cannot achieve self-illumination like OLED.

    2.Display effect and color performance

    OLED transparent display:
OLED screens have the advantage of being self-luminous, so they can provide extremely high contrast and vivid colors. Especially when displaying black, the OLED screen can truly display "pure black" because each pixel can be completely turned off, which means that the black performance of the OLED screen is deep and there is no light pollution. The transparent OLED display maintains a balance between transparency and display effect, and can present clear and vivid colors and images without affecting the perspective effect.

      LED display:
Traditional LED displays use backlights to display images, so their black performance is relatively weak and there is usually a certain amount of "light leakage" (that is, there is still a weak light source in the black part). Although modern LED screens use more advanced backlight technology (such as Mini-LED) to improve the display effect, they are still unable to compete with OLED in terms of contrast and color depth. The color performance of LED displays is more limited, especially when displaying pure black and high-contrast images, the effect is not as good as OLED.

      3.Transparency and structural design

      OLED transparent display:
One of the biggest features of OLED transparent display is its transparency. Through special design, transparent OLED screen can display content while maintaining high transparency. This allows it to be used on transparent glass or transparent materials, such as in car windows, shopping mall windows, smart glass and other scenes. The transmittance of transparent OLED is usually between 40% and 80%, depending on the specific design, so it can provide high-quality display effects without completely blocking the background scenery.

        LED display:
Traditional LED displays are not transparent. Due to its reliance on backlight, LED screens require a thicker structure in design to accommodate the backlight and LCD panel. This design makes the LED screen unable to be as transparent as OLED. Therefore, LED displays are usually used in situations where the background needs to be completely blocked, such as TVs, monitors, billboards, etc.

        4.Energy efficiency and service life

        OLED transparent display:
One of the advantages of OLED technology is its high energy efficiency. Since each pixel is self-illuminating, the OLED screen can adjust the brightness of each pixel according to the display needs of the content, thereby effectively saving energy. In addition, OLED screens have relatively low energy consumption because they have no backlight. The energy efficiency of transparent OLED displays may be affected by the transparency design, but overall they are still more energy efficient than LEDs.

In terms of service life, the life of OLED screens is often related to the aging of blue light materials, especially when high-brightness content is displayed for a long time. As technology improves, the lifespan of OLEDs has been significantly improved, but compared to LEDs, OLEDs still have poor durability.

          LED display:
Since LED displays require backlight support and the energy efficiency of backlights is relatively high, LED displays usually perform well in terms of energy efficiency. LED displays generally have a long service life, especially in low- or medium-brightness application scenarios. The lifespan of LEDs can reach tens of thousands of hours, which is much higher than traditional LCD technology.

          5.Differences in application scenarios

          OLED transparent display:
Transparent OLED displays are widely used in scenes where display content needs to be integrated with the environment due to its transparency and high-quality display effects. Common applications include:

Smart retail: Such as shopping mall windows and display cabinets, which are used to display advertisements or product information without hindering customers' viewing.
Smart home: Such as smart windows, doors and windows, which can display weather, news and other information without affecting the external view.
Car: Applied on the front windshield or window of the car, it can provide real-time data such as navigation information and vehicle speed.
Augmented reality: Combined with virtual reality and augmented reality, transparent OLED screens can display virtual information without blocking the real scene.

            LED display:
Due to its high brightness and long life, LED displays are widely used in the following scenarios:

TVs and computer monitors: As the mainstream display technology for home electronics, LED transparent screens are widely used in TVs, monitors, laptops and other equipment.
Billboards and large-screen displays: LED displays have strong visibility and are widely used in outdoor environments, such as large advertising screens, stadium display boards, etc.
Automotive display screens: Traditional LED displays are also used in car dashboards, in-car entertainment systems, etc.

OLED transparent display and LED display have obvious differences in the above aspects, and have their own characteristics. With the continuous advancement of technology, transparent OLED display is expected to be used in more industries, while LED display will continue to maintain its important position in the traditional display field.
